Here is some amazing footage of a fight at the US Open last night during a match between Novak Djokovic and Phillip Petzschner. The fight did not take place between the players but actually in the upper decks of the stadium between fans. The video is after the jump.
The New York Times reports that the altercation started pretty much as any other fight in the stands starts: with the younger guy being loud, crude and obnoxious. No mention of alcohol was made in the Times piece, but really all parties involved were smashed, there is some tennis punnery for you. As the story goes, the younger man was cursing and the woman told him to stop. Witnesses said he said something along the lines of "why don't you hit me if you don't like it" and, to his amazement, the woman did. Cue Michael Buffer and away we went.
Djokovic was asked about the fight after his straight set win. "It was far away from the court; we couldn't really see what was going on," he said. "I hope it was no Serbian up there."
All three participants were taken into custody but were released later that night with trespass warnings. They are not allowed to return to the U. Open for a specific period of time.
Here is updated video from the fight showing that indeed there was a slap from the woman in question.
