AEK Athens' second leg Europa League qualifier against Dundee United of Scotland has been thrown into chaos after Panionios fans have trashed their own stadium as a protest for having the match played in their home stadium.
AEK Athens normally play their matches at the Olympic Stadium but after the friendly between Genoa and Panathinaikos the pitch was deemed to be in unplayable condition and considerations were made to move the Europa League match to a nearby stadium. First AEK approached Panathinaikos to play the match at their home stadium, but being rivals, the request was denied. Then after deciding to host the match at Panionios' stadium the fans of Panionios set out to make sure that the match would not take place. But Panionios fans angry at the switch accessed the Nea Smyrni Stadium that evening and, using spades and other gardening tools, dug up the pitch and damaged the goalposts.
Therefore, AEK turned to Olympiakos. However, the 33,300 capacity of the stadium in the Piraeus district of Athens will house just the Scottish fans, with about 600 having made the trip from Scotland hoping to see their team overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit. That is some home field advantage.
I could spend the next 15 minutes of your day pontificating on the absolute sham that is the Greek football fan, but really the pictures speak for themselves. Greek fans need to get over their own egotistical driven agendas and act like grown men instead of undisciplined children. This is yet another black eye to Greek soccer and Greek culture.
