TFC Tidbits - March 28, 2012

What a difference four days make? Fresh off a lifeless and arguably pathetic performance against the San Jose Earthquakes, TFC bounces back with a passionate, dogged and determined effort against the top team in Mexico, Santos Laguna, in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals.

Toronto FC - Santos Laguna (1-1)

Welcome To Toronto Mr. Lambe

Arguably Reggie Lambe's best game  for Toronto since his arrival from Ipswich Town during the off-season. Lambe consistently attacked the left side of Santos' defense with pace and drive. If Lambe can continue to build on this performance, TFC's attack will only get stronger.

JDG Gives His First DP Performance

Julian De Guzman has been TFC's whipping boy during his first three years with the team, but on Wednesday he controlled the match from the middle of the park. Playing along side Terry Dunfield, JDG was the fulcrum for Toronto's attack and was committed to stifling any buildup play from the Mexicans.

Again, Someone Please Learn To Deliver A Corner

Again without Torsten Frings, Toronto is still missing a capable corner kick taker. Throughout the second half, maybe as a result of fatigue, Terry Dunfield's corners consistently hit the first line of defense. At minimum the ball has to clear the first line of defense, it is an absolute must.

Did Danny Have Too Many Danishes?

Perhaps I am being a tad critical, but Danny Koevermans does not look quite right. Is he out of shape, perhaps lacking some match fitness or are his skills beginning to deteriorate? His touch was quite poor during the match and for a DP we should be holding him to higher standards. He needs to finish his chances.

Passion In Spades On The Pitch And In The Stands

I was not expecting much prior to the match against Santos Laguna. However, the fans brought the passion and energy throughout the entire match and I believe that helped Toronto's players in a difficult match with horrible conditions. The supporters' group were fantastic and all the sections were chanting, standing and singing for the entire 90 minutes.

As a fan, all I can ask is for my teams is to play with effort and heart. Regardless of the outcome if my team plays with heart and passion, I will be proud of them and will continue to support them. Here is to more performances that mirror the one against Santos Laguna, rather than the one against San Jose.
