Eight teams are left at the Women's World Cup and this is where the tournament truly gets going. Let's take a look at the first two quarterfinal match-ups and pick our winners in this edition of fearless predictions.

Hosts primed as Japan seek new heights

Day 11

England - France

England surprised Japan on the final day of Group B action to win the group and set-up a quarterfinal date with France, who finished second in Group A. France have caused quite the stir at the World Cup, first with their demolition of Canada 4-0 and then by having three of their players pose topless before their match against Germany. Gotta love French women. Regardless, this quarterfinal should be a contrast in footballing styles. The Lady Brits play very similarly to the men with their focus on the long ball, physical play and aggressive counter-attacking football. The French women, on the other hand, prefer to keep the ball on the ground and play quick one-touch football that focuses on possession and speed. At the end of the day I am more likely to lean towards the team that plays the better brand of football, so France it is.

England - France (1-3)

Germany - Japan

Germany are undefeated in their previous eight matches against Japan and additionally Japan have yet to score a goal against Germany in their three losses at the World Cup. However, in their most recent meeting in 2009 both teams played to a 0-0 draw. Therefore, one can assume that the gap between both teams has been closing in recent years. So what can we expect when both teams meet in Wolfsburg on Saturday? Germany should carry the play against the Japanese and an early goal would kill the tie, because of Japan's lack of history at scoring goals against the Germans. However, the longer the game maintains at 0-0 the match could swing towards Japan's favor. It should be a fantastic contest.

Germany - Japan (2-0)

Fearless Predictions
16-8
